Air Conditioning - Air Conditioning Questions
1.50What is involved in installing Air Conditioning in a single family home?
Q.We live in an old 1950's house and currently have central heating, which my husband installed in our home a few years ago. Is it possible to add air conditioning, as well.
Can anyone help out with advice or how it would work and what the cost would be?
Real answers, please...no trolls!
A.You want to start with what you have that is very familiar to you but you haven't described it enough. Is it a forced hot air system with duct work and is the duct work insulated? If this is the case then the process is to install an "A" coil above the furnace and below the plenum that distributes air to the various ducts. This is connected to a condensate drain, and two refrigeration lines that are also insulated. The refrigeration lines connect to an outside unit called a condenser. The condenser has to have electrical power attached to it. The refrigeration lines must be vacuumed out with a vacuum pump and then the refrigerant has to be transferred to the appropriate levels in the now closed system.
The cost for this work will vary depending upon where it is done and the going rate in that location. The cost of the equipment will be more static but depend upon the capacity of the unit and this depends upon the size of the house.

1.10I have seen some contractors doing cold roofing?
Q.What is it, and they claim that it can cut air conditioning costs by upto 50%
where can i find such contractors
A.There are some cold roofing that is available to make sure the roofing is not only NOT leaking but also it reflects a lot of heat back( if you are in a tropical climate) or act as insulator if you are arctic climate.
there are many types roofings that you can do .
you can google them, or check the site, you can at least get some basic information on what to expect.

1.10Do tenants have a right to not pay rent for the time it takes the landlord to fix air conditioning?
Q.It is 90 degrees in our house and only gets hotter they said they won't come until tomorrow afternoon. I work from home, I have a very ill dog, and these are not suitable living conditions.
A.Generally not. Obtain a court order first, you can not just decide to withhold rent.
The dog will not be a legitimate reason in court, a signed lease and your AC being out for more then a couple of weeks will though. That is if the AC is covered in the lease. The next day is certainly not a problem for any reasonable person.

1.10Mold In Home A/C Air Handler?
Q.My wife and I purchased this used house about a month ago. Before the purchase the home inspector alerted me to a leak had been repaired hours before his inspection. The repair was at the elbow of a drainpipe coming from the bottom of the air handler, going through the crawl space, and exiting into an adjoining wall. After moving into the home, I began to smell a damp smell coming through the air duct when the air conditioner was in operation. In addition, all three of us have quite sensitive noses and began to show signs that something was amiss,. I began to inspect, looked into the crawl space and found no evidence of a current leak but there was a lot of dust, dead cockroaches, and a similar damp smell. I also took the panels off the air handler and noticed mold all over a motor, which I suspect, is the blower and one side of the evaporation coils. Since this is a 3-ton system (the a/c is a fifteen year old Ruud and the air handler is an old Tempstar) in a roughly 2,100 sq/ft home in Mississippi, I was seriously considering replacing this system in a couple months. The system is cooling but does not cycle as often as I think it should. I have been all over YAHOO! asking questions so I know many of you are tired of reading my posts. I had planned to order a system from an online company called Alpine and getting a contractor to install it. Now I am assuming that my air conditioning ducts may need cleaning too and it may be more prudent to pay retail with a local company that not only installs systems but also cleans air ducts. In an effort to improve the air quality a bit, I was thinking about getting a mask, shop vacuum, gloves, bleach and water solution, sponge, and evaporator coil cleaner and cleaning the coils, blower, and crawlspace until we are ready to replace the system. Am I correct in my assumptions can anyone give me prudent advice?
A.You will receive the best answer from a HVAC (heat ventilation and air conditioning) contractor.

1.10What would cause my HVAC high pressure (skinny) line to be colder than my low pressure (insulated) line?
Q.Just looking for ideas to check for when a service technician comes out to look at my air conditioning. I know these guys are very busy this time of year and just want to be careful that I am not being taken for a ride as they tell me a whole lot of this that may not even be the problem so they could just charge more. Basically, my problem is if you feel the skinny high pressure line from my condenser unit outside it is colder than the insulated line and I don't think that is the way it should be. My neighbors high pressure line is hot, why is mine not? The cooling inside is doing okay but it feels as if it should be cooler. Also any advise on what else I could check for myself before I call the service tech would be greatly appreciated.
A.Its hard to say what your system is doing unless we had system pressures, superheat and subcooling readings. Does the air off the top of the condensor feel warm? it should be at least warm. Now your liquid line( skinny line) shouldnt be hot but it shouldnt be cold either, the heat is pulled from the refrigerant at the condensor and is cooled down back to a liquid state from a gas state, the temperature of the liquid will drop as it makes its way back to the indoor coil. You can check your temps in the house, you should have about an 18-22 degree split between the air returning to your unit and the supply air coming from the air registers.

1.00Is an installer a good start to become a air conditioning technician?
Q.I went to school for hvac got out and started at a company but they started me out as an installer and im not sure if thats the start i wanted to this career i mean if i need it ill do it but what else can i do apartment maintanence or look for a helper position or should i just stay and try to become a lead install and how long would it take to become a service tech from an install?
A.School can teach you the fundamentals, but you NEED hands on experience to learn the things they don't teach you, the tricks of the trade if you will. Besides, isn't installing an AC part of being a tech?
There are very few occupations where you can just take what you learned in school and jump into the real world. Most occupations have some form of apprenticeship.
Did they teach you how to deal with customers that overlook your shoulder? Code violations you find? Dealing with building inspectors? Getting paid? Dealing with suppliers? Writing up estimates? Did they teach you EVERY cause of every problem in an AC? Have you been taught on every make and model there is, old and new? (I had to read and interpret the wiring diagram on my air handler to the ac tech working on my system that couldn't figure it out).
If you're as independent as you think you are, the company will soon recognize your talents, and let you go on to other responsibilities. And just remember, with the economy the way it is, there are plenty of unemployed craftsmen that would be willing to start at the bottom again.
Be humbled.
